Indian Railways fare classes explained

Indian railways is one of the preferred mode of travel in India. I think it can get quite confusing for people not familiar with our railway system, so I will try to explain various classes of travel available from the Indian Railways.

(1A) AC First Class:-  Most expensive class, with fares that can be at par with airline fares in some cases. It has spacious, carpeted and lockable compartments with a washbasin. Showers and toilets are available at either end of the carriage. Sheets, pillows, blankets, and towels are provided. Berth and coach number are allocated only at the time of chart preparation. You cannot specify if you want accommodation in a 2 berth or 4 berth compartment when booking. Couples are usually given preference for 2-berth compartments, while families and passengers traveling alone are usually allocated berths in one of the 4-berth compartments but this cannot be guaranteed.

(2A) AC 2-Tier:- AC 2-tier is found on almost all long-distance trains and is slightly cheaper than AC First Class and around 25% more expensive than non-AC First Class (FC). Coaches are air-conditioned with sleeping berths, curtains and individual reading lamps. Berths are arranged in cubicles of four (two upper, two lower) on one side of the aisle, and two above and below the windows on the other side of the aisle. Toilet facilities are available at either end of the carriage. Sheets, pillows and blankets are provided in the evenings.

(3A) AC 3 Tier:- Slightly cheaper than First Class, AC 3-tier is similar to AC 2-tier, but it is more crowded than AC 2-tier, and it lacks the privacy curtains and individual reading lamps found in AC 2-tier. It has three tiers of bunks—upper, middle and lower—arranged in bays of six on one side of the aisle, and bays of two (side-upper and side-lower) on the other side of the aisle. During the day, the middle beds must be folded down flat against the compartment walls to allow passengers to sit on the lower beds. Toilet facilities are available at either end of the carriage. Pillows, sheets and blankets are provided in the evening. 

(FC) First Class:- This is the way the Raj traveled, First Class has mostly been phased out in favor of Air Conditioned carriages. The fare is generally three times the Sleeper (SL) fare. It offers non-AC coaches with lockable 4-berth (two up & two down) and 2-berth (one up & one down) compartments. Bedding is not included in the fare, but may be available for a small extra charge if booked in advance. Showers and toilets are available at either end of the carriage. 

(CC) Chair Car:- Generally three times more expensive than Second Sitting (2S), the AC Chair Class is normally found on daytime shuttle or 'intercity' trains. There are a total of five seats in a row, three on one side and two on the other side of aisle. Only sitting room is provided, with no standees allowed. 

(SL) Sleeper:- Arguably the most popular class of travel, Sleeper has three tiers of bunks—upper, middle and lower—arranged in bays of six on one side of the aisle, and bays of two (side-upper and side-lower) on the other side of the aisle. During the day, the middle beds must be folded down flat against the compartment walls to allow passengers to sit on the lower beds. Toilet facilities are available at either end of the carriage. Bedding is not provided. 

(2S) Second Setting:-  The cheapest class of travel on the Indian Railways, Second Sitting has ordinary coaches which have seating arrangement on cushioned seats in two rows of 3 seats each.

Miniatur Wunderland- A biggest railway model

Miniature Wonderland is a model railway attraction in Hamburg, Germany  and the largest of its kind in the world. As of January 2010, the railway consists of 12,000 meters (41,089 ft) of track in H0 scale, divided into five sections: Southern Germany, Hamburg and the coast, America, Scandinavia and Switzerland. Of the 4,000 square meters (43,056 sq ft) of floorspace, the model takes 1,500 m2 (16,146 sq ft).

By 2014 the exhibit is due to double the number of sections to ten; the next section covering an airport,
is due to open in 2010. The exhibit includes 900 trains made up of 12,000 carriages;  300,000 lights, 200,000 trees and 200,000 human figures. The creators promise that the railroad  will show small models of France, Italy and the UK.

" Zenda " sends a strong message to fanatical party workers

Avdhut Gupte's much awaited political thriller  &   controversial Marathi movie " Zenda "  is release on 8th January 2010 all over Maharastra. You may be a dedicated worker of any political party having blind faith in your leader, but when your leaders take you for granted, the day is not far when your conscience will not permit you to continue with them further.  Set on the backdrop of the situation that had arisen in Maharashtra, due to split in a regional party over the issue of their chief handing over the leadership to his own son. The director has tried to emphasize on the impact of  political crisis on the dedicated party workers. " Zenda" does not openly show the senior political leader and founder of the party in this film, but only his shivering hands holding the Rudraksha string, indicate his presence in few scenes. The entire screenplay tests the patience of three fanatical youths who are affected by the changing political scenario in the state politics with the change in stance by their leaders. On the other hand, how the fourth youth who is a shrewd consultant of an Event Management company benefits out of this political battle, has been cleverly shown through this film. 

Director Avadhoot Gupte has tried to touch upon so many other relevant  issues covered by the story and screenplay writer Sachin Darekar. One of them is obviously the selfish attitude of the leaders, while playing the hand in glove game with opposition party leaders to protect each other’s interest.  Very clearly the film goes on to show how a Home minister of a ruling party is in touch with his opposition party leader to derive maximum benefits for him and his party. In the climax, the director has shown as to how the change in stance by their leaders at the last minute, make them lose their dedicated workers. And at the same time, it is shown as to who ultimately benefits. 

" Zenda " is an action packed thriller based on a serious issue that ultimately affects today’s youth, but it is a more a serious tale rather than an entertaining film. It is altogether a different cinema showing the dark side of Maharashtra’s politics and how the local Maharashtrians ultimately suffer. Those who love to watch films on realistic subjects, will surely like " Zenda "  Besides good music, excellent photography at outdoor locations; the other plus points of the film are good editing and performances of the artistes, who look so natural. 

Surprisingly, the film  has not received much opposition prior to its release, except for a delegation belonging to one upcoming party, lodging their protest over few scenes. It is very difficult to predict the success of this well presented film, but one thing is clear that Marathi cinema has taken up a bolder and sensible theme to create that required impact on the target audience affected by blind faith in their leaders.

Watch Santosh Juvekar as a fanatic party worker. His body language and spontaneous reactions speaks a lot about the dilemma of a serious party worker. On the other hand, Sidhharth Chandekar who plays his close friend and his own sister’s boy friend, has a different image of a well educated young man, who takes his decisions as per his conscience.  Chinmay Madlekar the young party worker from Kolhapur perfectly fits into his character of an educated youth who is very ambitious of making it big in Politics.

Among others in the cast Puskar Shotri and Rajesh Shringarpure fit perfectly into their respective characters, well supported by Tejashree Pradhan,Sachit Patil, Neha Joshi, Ujwala Jog and Shubhangi Gokhale.

Elevated expressway to connect Bangalore to electronic hub

A dedicated 10 km elevated expressway is being built from the Silicon hub of Bangalore to the electronics city to ferry thousands of IT professionals to their workplace in top gear non-stop. 'The drive along the elevated corridor and the six-lane highway on the ground will reduce travel time and save fuel costs by over 30 percent. A two-lane service road on both sides of the highway will cater to slow-moving vehicles, including tractors, carts and bicycles, with sidewalks (footpaths) and four underpasses for pedestrians,' Muniappa said.

The consortium will recover the project cost over a 20-year period by charging a fee of Rs.10 for two-wheelers, Rs.25 for cars, Rs.35 for mini-buses and Rs.70 for buses for the elevated expressway. Two-wheelers will, however, be exempt from toll for using the six-lane highway. Four-wheelers such as cars, mini buses and buses will have to pay Rs.15, Rs.25 and Rs.50, respectively. Trucks, earth moving equipment and heavy construction machinery will be charged Rs.105 for the highway and Rs.140 for the elevated expressway. As one of the busiest sections in the country, the 40 km Bangalore-Hosur stretch of NH-7 has been a nightmare for motorists and commuters as the dense vehicular traffic has been causing severe hardships, with delays, pollution and congestion compounding the situation.
